May CC Minutes

Families, Food and Fitness
May 2012 Conference Call Agenda
May 15, 2012, 1pm Central

Participants: Kathleen Morgan, Alice Henneman, Angelia Clinton, Ashley Fondren, Carolyn Dunn, Joanne Kinsey, Bethany Dougherty, Wanda Koszewski

1. Responses from 5 family CoPs, (Super CoP) feedback

  • The super CoP will be more “discoverable”. The feedback from FFF CoP members showed that because of lack of funding it might be best to join together.
  • The Super Family CoP Optimization application would hire a 2/3rds time project manager for the entire CoP if funding is awarded.
  • Joining together may give us another audience & increase site traffic.
  • There may or may not be a name change
  • There will be a new form of “Ask The Expert” and it will be much more streamlined than it currently is right now.
  • On the optimization call recently, someone suggested: Instead of the individual CoPs trying to optimize our own site it may be more efficient and accurate for the eXtension staff to look at our site & tell us what needs to be improved.
  • Content Appraisal is complete but there are broken links that need to be repaired or updated.
  • Most of the other CoPs scores were in the 2s but ours were in the 4s, so it’s important to have an expert group of evaluators to look at our site & give us scores.

2. Call for articles – specifications

  • It may be good to make a list of topic areas that need to be written.
  • Pinterest articles—very popular social site. Alice Henneman agreed to write an article about how to use.
  • Family Meals, sugary drinks,
  • Sugary drink summit in Washington June 7th & 8th
  • Could we do “ARTICLE OF THE DAY” or “ARTICLE OF THE WEEK” through our social sites? Angelia is creating a list of themes to highlight content currently on the FFF CoP site. We’ll try to do a theme each week & make it appropriate to the time of year.
  • We could add a questionnaire that’s related to the article that we post and generate viewer feedback.  à Could serve as a talking point for parents & grandparents about nutrition topics regarding children and grandchildren. Could collaborate with a Just In Time Parenting CoP.
  • Goal: Create conversation around article postings. Helps to engage users in content and internalize message.

3. Webinar with Jenny Fisher (after January 2013)

  • Dr. Fisher has a timeline of completion in the first week of June.
  • If the CoPs merge, it will happen in January.
  • May want to wait to release interactive and articles after January.

4.  Weight of the Nation

  • There was mention of sugary drinks, early education, worksite wellness, food systems, and early care.
  • BirdsEye invested money over the next 3 years to encourage kids to eat more vegetables (GenVeg)
  • Also, they will distribute 50 million coupons & bring 2 new vegetable products to the market.
  • Sesame Workshop presented the Sesame Street muppets conveying healthy messages such as the Cookie Monster character that only wanted cookies but knew the importance of eating vegetables.
  • If you had to pick two places to put your energy & efforts, Weight of the Nation encouraged involvement in Worksite wellness & schools because that’s where you get the most numbers.

5.  Two Herb series videos completed (Ways to Share)

  • Views on Vimeo have increased because Alice posted it on the University of Nebraska website throughout the state.
  • Healthy Herbs: Pesto & Healthy Herbs: Chives  http://www.extension.org/pages/62857/families-food-and-fitness-informative-videos
  • Currently working on a video about Mint

6.  Anything Else…

  • Carolyn Dunn has a new ILSI project that looks at comparing processed foods with fresh, 125 pairs of foods and their value.  Carolyn will be involved in an Extension application phase that the CoP may want to be involved with.  Will be ongoing over the next 12-15 months.

1.     Technology Team Update – Joanne Kinsey

  • Adding video to FFF site (via creating our own or using existing materials) is a major interest
  • Goal is to poll CoP and find out what videos we already have & which ones need to be created; would like to put together a master list of food related video
  • Next Step: Send out Google Docs to get feel for what videos are out there
  • When sending out poll to CoP members, we may also need to include the video showing how simple it is to add videos.
  • Newly added videos may need closed captioning
  • We could add video (of 6 behaviors) with out having someone talking http://vimeo.com/11551721?utm_source=SaaHLNews_Oct11&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=%2325+Selling+at+a+Higher+Level+newsletter+-+October+2011  ßExample of non-talking video that got over 77,000 hits!
  • The American Heart Association has included videos of heart healthy recipes that were already on youtube; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWjX8HFrdN4&feature=player_embedded ß The AHA chose to embed the video on their page
  • Technology Team mentioned they are still interested in creating some sort of App for distribution.
  • Short videos for the FFF site for cooking using herbs: May want to include something concerning Medicinal Herbs.  Maybe a (2-3 minute video) on the benefits of cooking with herbs

2.   eXtension is collecting data on how Extension is using social media in
their work

  • Youtube insight data has been replaced by analytics (shows views and likes of videos and how many embedded your content)
  • FB insight is still available (shows demographics of people & their sharing of your content)
  • It’s important to post new, relevant FFF content to be ‘liked’ and ‘shared’ among friends of friends.

3.  eXtension is developing an “eXtension Foundation Leadership Council” led
by Global Advancement, LLC

  • The goal is to get a group of people that could help raise funding for eXtension projects
  • If anyone would like to be a part of the Leadership Council, please contact Kathleen for more information

4.   Content appraisal

  • Graduate students are on page 23 of 34 for the content appraisal process.
  • Estimate time of completion is no later than mid January

5.   Articles

  • Two articles have been added to the site recently (The Truth about America’s most loved Vegetable, the Potato”extension.org/pages/61635 & Food Safety is a Must When it Comes to Packing School Lunches” –extension.org/pages/61720)
  • Three more articles are currently up for review and will be able to be published soon

6.  Have the students been able to add content to FB and Twitter

  • Graduate students have been able to update content to Facebook and Twitter
  • Please remember to share any new content through your personal page, which helps with exposure and hits

  • Some goals include more integration, build upon new research, and fund sustainability
  • Focal points are Characteristics, Behaviors, Resources and Activities
  • For a more detailed listing of optimization process, please see links below

8.   Increasing Discoverability of the CoP

  • As we learn more about the online world, the importance of developing a presence on social media and using those connections to share, promote, and interact is reinforced daily.
  • The FFF Technology Team recently created a Google Docs spreadsheet for CoP members to list the social media in which they are involved. Please visit the Google Docs spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuuhSTnpOmP8dFZod3lyWWstOU1UdXJDT2syT29Od3c and enter your social media addresses. You can also connect with other CoP members on their respective social media sites.
  • It is our hope that as we connect with one another, we can create a larger presence on these sites by sharing content that CoP members post.

9.   Anything Else…

  • In Nevada, lots of parents are Spanish-speaking individuals. There are lots of Spanish written materials that are already available and could be added to the FFF site if necessary.
  • Teachers love the idea of using the extension FFF site in their classrooms. Some feedback they’ve given includes the ease of use and interactive tools that help make teaching their subjects more interesting. By optimizing our resources, it would be great idea to market FFF to nutrition teachers and elementary teachers. Elementary teachers sometimes have to teach health and FFF may benefit them in that regard.
  • Let’s also remember to use the survey tool that’s on the site to get more feedback from the teachers when they use FFF in their classrooms.
